Access Music releases OS v2.0 for Virus TI

Access Music has announced version 2.0 of the Operating System for the Virus TI. Version 2.0 for the Virus TI adds Graintable, Formant-based oscillators and enhanced Wavetable synthesis. The new operating system introduces Section Locking for the Virus Control plug-in, searchable patch categories, 25 additional Wavetables and 256 additional signature ROM sounds, an improved user interface, a patch complexity indicator as well as loads of other refinements.

The Graintable oscillators applies techniques as those used in granular sampling and pitch-shifting algorithms to synthesizer Wavetables. It opens up a whole world of new possibilities. Imagine bending any Wavetable far beyond what is sonically possible with common Wavetable synthesizers. It all happens in realtime and of course all parameters can be modulated in realtime as well.

The formant-based oscillators work in a similar fashion, only with one crucial difference: the formants remain fixed as you play. This effectively turns the oscillator into a filterbank on steroids comprising up to 256 resonant bandpass filter poles, whereby the cutoff of each virtual pole is determined by the harmonics in the current Wavetable index.

The existing Wavetable oscillators were also updated. OS2.0 allows PWM-style modulation and the degree of interpolation between the individual waves can be altered. As a result a Wavetable can morph from smooth to coarse to stepped (which makes it sound similar to a wave sequence). It's like turning a nice ambient patch into a dark, gritty sonic monster by only changing one continuously variable parameter.

Virus Control underwent major improvements. There is Section Locking, a new technology by Access Music, enabling the TI to lock specific aspects of a sound from changing. For instance locking everything but the arpeggiator. Now when browsing through the library the sound character will remain unchanged, but the arpeggiator pattern will alter depending on the settings of the selected new patch. All you need to do is to choose what you dislike about a patch and find something better within the TI library.

Two banks of signature patches have been added to the TI's ROM. Brooklyn based breaks and electro wizard Matt Stolley spent most of 2006 working on "10 dirty years" - certainly the darkest collection of Virus sounds so far. On top, Matt Picone supplied a performance bank which is also optimised for the TI.

The patch complexity indicator shows how much resources a certain sound requires.

Virus TI OS2 will be available for free download very soon for all existing Virus TI user from www.virus.info.

East West / Quantum Leap announces Six New Virtual Instruments

East West / Quantum Leap has announced six new virtual instruments, all powered by PLAY, their new 64-bit Advanced Sample Engine with built-in Network Control (see additional news item).

The instruments are (details are below):

Fab Four
Quantum Leap Pianos
Quantum Leap Gypsy
Quantum Leap Ministry Of Rock
Quantum Leap Voices Of Passion
Quantum leap SD2 The Next Generation.
All instruments are expected to ship in March 2007. Fab Four and Gypsy have MSRPs of $395 while the rest have MSRPs of $495 each. They will be available for Windows and Mac OS X Universal Binary in VST, Audio Units, RTAS and stand-alone formats. If you pre-order now you can save 10%.

Fab Four is a virtual instrument inspired by the sounds of the Beatles, using the same kind of instruments and recording equipment the Beatles used to create their music. No expense was spared finding the same kind of equipment the Beatles used to create their sounds to produce this collection.

Well over a million dollars worth of rare period instruments, amplifiers, microphones, recording desks (including very rare EMI REDD tube and TG12345 desks), outboard equipment (including Fairchild limiters and EMI RS124 modified Altec compressors), and Studer J-37 tube multi-tracks were used in this production.

Recording:

Engineered by KEN SCOTT (Beatles/David Bowie/Elton John/Supertramp etc.).
Includes authentic rare period guitars (acoustic and electric), basses, drums, keyboards, stringed and other misc instruments.
The same kind of microphones were used to record all instruments (Neumann/AKG/Cole/STC).
The same kind of period amplifiers - Vox AC30 (1963), Fender Showman (1967), Fender DeLuxe (1967), Fender Tan Showman (1963), Vox Defiant (1966), Vox 730 (1966), Vox 7120 (1966), Fender Bassman (1963) - were used with the electric guitars.
The same kind of recording desks and preamps, including a very rare EMI REDD tube desk, EMI TG12345 desk (the same kind of desk used to record Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon"), and EMI REDD47 preamps, were used to record all instruments.
The same kind of limiters (Fairchild) and compressors (rare EMI RS124 modified Altec) were used for dynamics control.
The same kind of Studer J-37 tube 4-track was used to record everything.
Instruments:

Guitars (some costing over $200,000 each) played by Laurence Juber (Paul McCartney and Wings) include Gretsch Firebird (1959), Gretsch Tennessean (1963), Rickenbacker 360-12 (1965), Martin D-28 (1966), Fender Stratocaster (1956), Epiphone Casino (1956), Fender Telecaster (1951), Gibson SG (1960), Les Paul Goldtop (1957), Gibson J200 (1966), Hofner Bass (1963) and Rickenbacker Bass (1964).
Guitars were sampled with up and down strokes, multiple velocities and picking styles, some with chords and effects.
Most of the sounds would be impossible to create without all of the above equipment. For example, the "revostortion" guitar sound was created by feeding a Epiphone Casino guitar into one EMI REDD 47 preamp, and the output into a second EMI REDD 47 preamp, which is exactly how it was created originally by the EMI/Abbey Road engineers.
Drums played by DENNY SEIWELL (Paul McCartney and Wings) include a rare 1960 Ludwig downbeat kit with Zildjian cymbals (snare 5 x 14/toms 9 x 13/16 x 16/kick 22 x 14/zildjan 20" crash ride/18" crash medium/14" Hi-Hat).
Drums are all multi-sampled with up to 16 velocity layers, left and right hand. The sounds were all matched to a particular style (e.g. A Day in the Drums, Ticket to Drums, Yer Drums). We even recorded some heavily modulated cymbals through a Fairchild limiter for authenticity.
Keyboards include Baldwin Electric Harpsichord (Because I'm a Harpsichord), Clavioline (Baby I'm a Clavioline), Birthday Piano (through VOX Defiant guitar amp), Lucy in the Lowery, Strawberry Flutes, We Can Work a Harmonium, and other stringed instruments including Swarmandel Forever.
Effects:

Includes a software version of ADT (artificial double tracking) with built-in tape simulator, created and programmed specially for this project.
All instruments are newly recorded multi-samples for this collection, none of the sounds came from any Beatles music or records.
Quantum Leap Pianos is a detailed collection of the world's finest grand pianos, recorded in EastWest Studios with 3 mic positions for each piano.

Korg announces M3 Music Workstation/Sampler (Hardware with plug-in editor)

Korg has announced the M3 Music Workstation/Sampler, which represents the third generation of hardware Music Workstations from Korg. It inherits elements from the flagship OASYS, distilled into an affordable music production package with a new tone generator, a wealth of innovations and new sounds.

This new chip-based synthesis system, EDS (Enhanced Definition Synthesis) shares much of the OASYS' HD-1 lineage including low-aliasing oscillators, a powerful new filter topology, detailed envelope generators, plus a Drive parameter and AMS Mixers. All second-generation KARMA functions from the OASYS are included.

256 MB of ROM incorporates the "best-of" OASYS ROM into a new soundset. 512 Programs and 384 Combinations are onboard, with space for 1,664 Programs and 1,792 Combinations. For increased power, the EXB-RADIAS expansion board adds a 24-voice, single timbre version of the MMT synthesizer used by the RADIAS and R3 synths.

The color "TouchView" display doubles as an X/Y pad for controlling synthesis and effects parameters, while changing colors in response to movements. The M3 features the same type of real-time control surface as first featured on OASYS — eight sliders and switches for tweaking internal sounds, mixing tracks, interacting with KARMA, controlling external hardware and more. Eight velocity-sensitive pads can be used to trigger notes, chords and controller messages for a variety of applications.

An all-new Drum Track feature provides user-programmable drum grooves to jam with in Program and Combi modes, integrating with KARMA, or song-writing. Over 500 patterns with a natural sound and feel are included.

A new high-resolution sequencer offers 480 PPQ for natural feel, plus Korg's One-Touch Record, Song Templates, RPPR, Cue List and Tone Adjust part editing. The Open Sampling System allows sampling and resampling in every mode. 64 Mb of sample memory are included standard, expandable to 320 Mb.

The bundled M3 Editor/Librarian software works stand-alone or as a plug-in within host software via USB MIDI. The editor runs as a VST, AU or RTAS plug-in on Windows XP and Mac OS X Universal Binary. Additionally, a new EXB-Firewire option enables the M3 to interface both audio and MIDI with a computer using a single cable.

The M3 is available in 61- and 73-key semi-weighted synth action versions, featuring a newly designed keybed. The 88-key version uses Korg's RH3 graded weighted action keybed. All three models feature after-touch sensitivity.

The M3 series offers a new design concept (Korg Komponent System), for configuration as an expandable instrument. The 73-key version can host both the M3 and the RADIAS·R modules; the 88-key version can hold dual M3 engines or the M3/RADIAS configuration.

The Korg M3 series instruments are expected to start shipping in June 2007 with pricing to be announced.

Way Out Ware announces KikAxxe

Way Out Ware has announced KikAxxe, a faithful emulation of the classic ARP Axxe synthesizer—and much more.

Built with Way Out Ware's analog-modeling technology, the KikAxxe brings together the Axxe synthesizer, analog-style 16-step sequencer, a dedicated step-sequenced drum machine and a retro-themed delay/echo effect. Chock full of modern conveniences like presets, MIDI sync and comprehensive MIDI-mapping capabilities, the KikAxxe has all of the features you'd expect.

Vintage ARP Axxe Emulation
KikAxxe is a faithful emulation of the ARP Axxe analog synthesizer that descended from the venerable ARP 2600 in the mid '70s. This combo gives you a powerful tool for creating distinctive synth bass lines. And to enhance lead lines and effects, KikAxxe also includes an emulation of the unique sound of the Echoplex—the original tape delay device that preceded digital delay units.

Drums Included
KikAxxe's Sequencer + also includes a complementary staple from the same era—a drum machine with dedicated step sequencer. With five sample-based drum kits, you'll find the sounds responsible for many hit songs across several decades—and then some. KikAxxe gives you the ability to create great bass and drum backing tracks in a single unit.

Simple Preset Operation or In-depth Programming
KikAxxe ships with a vast array of presets that give you access to the unit's vintage sound—even if you don't know anything about synthesis or programming. From there, it's easy to explore and modify parameters to start customizing the presets to your own tastes. And if you're a synth aficionado, advanced mode gives you access to every authentic parameter. You can even map MIDI controllers on to just about every KikAxxe control for a truly hands-on experience.

Sonic Reality announces Ocean Way Drums

At NAMM, Sonic Reality is introducing the new Ocean Way Drums Kontakt Player 2 based sample library. The brainchild of engineer/producer and studio owner Allen Sides, OWD utilized the world's most extensive collection of vintage microphones to record drums in Ocean Way's renowned Studio B, designed by recording legend Bill Putnam.

Sides' partners in the project are well known engineer/producer and label executive Steven Miller, and Dave Kerzner, CEO of Sonic Reality. The OWD library incorporates legendary studio acoustics and expert engineering with the highly expressive MIDI-controlled I-Map programming in sample formats such as Native Instruments Kontakt 2, all in one collection.

Sides and Miller recorded full drum kits with the finest kick drums, snares, toms, hi hats and cymbals, utilizing a unique multi-microphone recording technique that captures the sound of each instrument with optimum sonic impact and spatial depth. An enormous variety of sounds are instantly available via preset mixes made by these engineers. Additionally, a virtually unlimited sonic palate is available by experimenting with the various stereo sub mixes, control of the pitch, tone and effect processing.

The sampling sessions of Ocean Way Drums utilized a one-of-a-kind custom console built by the studio's original designer Bill Putman. This console in Ocean Way's Studio B delivers "astonishing clarity" with a slew rate exceeding 200 volts per microsecond running on 28 volt rails, and is considered to be the fastest console on the planet. The historic Studio B has hosted sessions with Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Green Day, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and Radiohead, among countless other ground-breaking artists. It is the home of one of the best sounding live rooms and some of the most sought after vintage gear in the world. Also employed in the sampling session were highly customized classic outboard gear by Neve, API, UREI, and Fairchild along with rare hand-selected vintage tube microphones and special drum kits that have been recorded by top artists on albums at Ocean Way over the years.

Sonic Reality's I-MAP is a proprietary MIDI note mapping/drum kit layout scheme that facilitates improved live performance of drum kits via MIDI keyboard input. I-MAP places drums in their most flexible and intuitive positions, allowing each of the fingers on both hands independent and coordinated control over the loaded kit. With very little practice, it is possible to lay down complete drum tracks in a single take that have an entirely realistic sound and rhythm.

Additionally, special maps have also been made for control with high-end drum pads such as the Roland V-Drums. Many of the performance articulations from I-Map were designed to be triggered with maximum dynamics and alternate randomization for incredible realism and expression when played from top of the line drum pad controllers. Finally, access to the individual mic channel samples is also available for direct drum replacement in DAWs such as ProTools, Nuendo, Logic and more.

Ocean Way Drums is touted as a complete solution for creating the highest quality drum tracks for all styles of music.

More info when we get it.

Arturia announces Origin

Arturia has announced its first Hardware synthesizer: Origin.

Origin is a modular system loaded with modules extracted from Moog Modular, ARP 2600, CS-80, Minimoog and Prophet VS (for now) - you can combine these modules to create your own synth. It uses two Analog Devices TigerSHARC DSP processors that have more audio power than the newest multi core PC processors, apparently.

Origin is not a simple Hardware synthesizer, it is an integrated system offering the best out of the Hardware and Software Worlds: Origin can be used as stand alone to play live on stage and also as a plug-in within your sequencer in the studio environment.

Origin takes the concept of the analog modular systems of the past to a new level using cutting edge digital technology. Pick the oscillators from the Prophet VS, the filters from the Minimoog and the Bode shifter from the Moog Modular V to create your own synth. But, while you can design synthesizers that have never existed before, Origin also lets you open existing templates that can be a Minimoog, a CS-80, a Moog Modular or an ARP 2600.

The Multi mode lets you play up to 4 synthesizers at the same time. You can layer them, split a keyboard or use Origin as a source for 4 different tracks in your sequencer. In addition, the Macro mode allows you to control the 4 synths at the same time, making Origin one single instrument.

Main Features:

Create your own patch or use an existing audio structure: an Origin patch made by connecting independent modules, or the minimoog V, the ARP 2600, the CS-80, the Moog Modular.
Up to 32 voices of polyphony for a typical patch.
More than 500 presets created by talented musicians and synthesizer specialists.
TAE engine. 24 bits/96 kHz supported.
Compatibility with most of the presets from the Arturia classic virtual analog synthesizers.
Origin lets you open dedicated software on your computer and use it as an AU or VST plug-in. All the sounds are calculated on the machine while you work on your computer, as you would do with a native application. Mac OS X and Windows supported.
Analog: 2 audio ins, 10 audio outs. Digital: SPDIF out, USB 2.0.
Large selection of effects: Phaser, Chorus, Delay, FX Reverbs, Distortion, Param Eq, Compressor, Bitcrusher, etc.

Celemony announces Melodyne v3.2 and releases MSL the voice 1 & 2

Celemony has announced version 3.2 of Melodyne studio and cre8, which offer new playback algorithms as well as various minor improvements and bug fixes. The updates will be available free of charge to registered users of Melodyne cre8/studio 3 from the beginning of March onwards.

The extended algorithm for polyphonic and rhythmic material in Melodyne studio 3.2 offers adjustable formant correction, which, on the one hand, makes highly natural, acoustically neutral, transposition now possible even with multi-voice signals such as pianos, guitars and choirs, as well as, on the other hand, opening up interesting and rewarding sound design possibilities when working with drum loops and percussive material. Meanwhile, Melodyne cre8 3.2 has been equipped with a new algorithm for percussive material that offers enormous improvements in terms of sound compared to its predecessors.

Among the other new features of Melodyne cre8/studio 3.2 are the combined scroll/zoom beams that were introduced by Melodyne plugin, an alternative grey colour scheme for the user interface, various improvements in the display and handling of percussive material, and a more user-friendly implementation of the copy protection.

The updates to Melodyne cre8/studio 3.2 are available free of charge to all registered 3.x customers and will be ready for download from www.celemony.com from the beginning of March onwards. Melodyne cre8 for Windows XP and Mac OS X costs €319 ($369), whilst the large Melodyne studio edition, with its additional algorithms for polyphonic material, costs €699 ($699).

New Titles in the Melodyne Sound Library: "the voice 1 & 2"

Celemony has also announced the release of two new Melodyne Sound Libraries for the multi-track editions of Melodyne: cre8 and studio. The two DVDs, "the voice vol. 1" and "the voice vol. 2", offer first-class choral phrases with which the voicing, tonality, phrasing and tempo of each voice can be edited individually. The DVDs are available immediately and cost €139 ($159) each.

Vol. 1 of this collection contains phrases with lyrics such as "listen to the groove", "keep me movin' on", "liftin' me higher", "party everybody", "you make me wanna dance", "universal love", "feel so high", "when will you stop playing" and many more. In vol. 2, the choir sings non-verbal lines, from the straightforward to the way-out, and from simple "Ah"s, "Oh"s and "Schupdhuah"s to complex vocal arrangements.

Each of the two "the voice" titles in the Melodyne Sound Library contains more than 3 gigabytes of phrases recorded by renowned studio singers. No effects or dynamic processing were applied to the samples during recording to leave users maximum freedom during post production.

AudioRealism releases Bass Line 2

AudioRealism has released Bass Line 2 and announced the renaming of AudioRealism Bass Line Pro to AudioRealism Semi Modular (ASM).

Amongst the new features in Bass Line 2 the most important thing is the sound:

The bass is improved for less muddiness.
The filter has been improved to incorporate subtle nonlinear effects for additional squelch.
The distortion unit has been improved with less aliasing.
The controls have been calibrated to better match the response of the original.
New features:

Pattern analyzer with Audio detection: The pattern analyzer is a tool for editing and analyzing patterns. It can create patterns using audio files as a source.
Improved filter emulation: The filter has been improved so as to include the nonlinear behavior of the original. This gives additional 'squelch' in fast sweeps.
Accent ducking: On the original 303 it will take the envelope a while to 'warm up' after an accent. When the accent knob is fully counter clockwise this can be perceived as a ducking envelope. This feature is now included in ABL2.
Pattern library: The pattern library menu allows easy access to your favorite patterns. It also possible to load several patterns in one go by selecting multiple patterns from the Load Pattern dialog.
Two new 3D skins included.
Other improved features:

MIDI Learn function now displays all mapped CCs.
Load multiple patterns at once.
Preferences dialog for easier setup.
Pattern section buttons are now MIDI assignable.
ABL2 imports the following file formats: RBS, PH and PAT.
PNG support for easier user skinning.
ABL2 still costs €95 (+ VAT if applicable). ABL1 users can upgrade for €25. All users that ordered ABL after October 1st, 2006 will receive the upgrade for free.

reFX releases Vanguard v1.6.1 (incl. Universal Binary)

reFX has released version 1.6.1 of Vanguard, which is now a Universal Binary / Intel-Mac compatible on Mac OS X.

Changes in v1.6

Sound:

Oscillator age (age) sets the virtual age of the oscillators. The older they get, the more unstable the frequency. Use sparingly for a more analog feel.
A small bug in the wavetable-player of the oscillators has been fixed. This bug switched to the wrong wavetables in the upper-octaves, which lead to a slightly uncleaner sound.
The setup-page has a new option called “output exciter”. This exciter has always been enabled in previous versions, but has now been made optional for a smoother overall sound.
Convenience:

Use the right mouse-button in empty areas to open the context-menu which has two new features. The first is “Init preset” or “Init bank”. The second is a sub-menu which allows you to set the “lightness” of the background groups.
The “edit”-button has been removed. The result is that Vanguard is now always in edit-mode. The amount of work required to make re-sizing of the window work with VST 2.4 on OSX and as AU, etc. was simply not worth the result anymore, especially considering the number of hosts which couldn't be coerced into re-sizing the window at all.
General:

Vanguard is now a VST 2.4 plugin, and is also available as a Universal-Binary (OSX).
Fixes in v1.6.1:

Works with Logic 5.5.1 PC again. The previous version didn't support the process() function anymore.
The knobs/dials couldn't be used anymore in the OSX-AU-version.
The preset-format in projects wasn't compatible between Intel and non-Intel platforms. The new algorithm detects this now automatically and fixes this, even for projects started with 1.6.0.
